City on a Hill Public Charter School Partners with Roxbury Community College and Wentworth Institute of Technology, Sets Students up for College Success
ROXBURY, MA – City on a Hill Public Charter School, a tuition-free, Boston-based college preparatory high school, announced that more than 75% of its students are participating in a dual-enrollment program with Roxbury Community College and Wentworth Institute of Technology (also in Roxbury). High school students who meet the minimum GPA requirement or pass a placement test can take college-level courses for free at these two institutions. Students split their time between high school- and college-level classes.
“Helping our students achieve academic and personal success has always been the cornerstone of our school. Dual enrollment accelerates their college-bound journey with the help and support they need,” said Laura Tobias Edouard, Chief Academic Officer at City on a Hill.
Since the program started, it has helped hundreds of students get closer to achieving their college dreams and advancing their goals. This year, however, the program was accelerated and now serves nearly all juniors and seniors.
“I'm getting a head start in college while I'm still in high school. I'm excited about the advantages it will give me in the college application process. Dual Enrollment is a great way for students to learn about different ways to learn,” said Jonairy Ramirez, Student at City on a Hill.
“Dual enrollment has allowed our students to experience growth and independence that they would not otherwise experience. It opens the door to talk about work-life balance and time management, which helps them immensely once they leave high school,” said Jennifer Valencia, College and Career Counselor at City on a Hill. “It’s great to have these conversations now, so it’s not a shock to the system when they leave high school, whether it be to college, trade school, or straight into the workforce.”
"The Dual Enrollment program here at Roxbury Community College has provided City on a Hill high school students with an opportunity to explore many academic pathways to unlock their future success. Exposing our youth to the rigor of college coursework prepares them for future challenges and helps reduce the transitional shock from high school to the college environment,” said Chantea High, Admissions Counselor/Dual Enrollment Coordinator.
